Rafael Nadal, And Other Reasons Tennis Is A Treasure Trove For Gays

Sports is not exactly the most important thing in my life, but it’s still quite important (Damn, that’s sounds so sad! Could it be more obvious that I don’t have a boyfriend?). There is an absolutely terrific soccer championship coming to a close in Austria and Switzerland this weekend (the Euro 2008 final between Germany and Spain on Sunday), and also the ongoing tennis tournament at Wimbledon is about to close its first week. But no matter how interested I might be in both tennis and soccer, this of course is not just about the athletic achievements.

Euro 2008 serves up such hotness as German Lukas Podolski, Spaniards Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas, Dutch Robin van Persie, Klaas Huntelaar, and Portuguese heartthrob Cristiano Ronaldo. But the reasons for my interest in the Wimbledon proceedings might be even more shallow. Spain’s Rafael Nadal is not only the world’s second best player, he is not also disturbingly sexy, with his extraordinary physique and tender smile. No one else can quite compare to Nadal, but players like American Andy Roddick and Russian Marat Safin are not bad for eye-candy either. Sadly, Roddick has already been knocked out, and Safin is a long shot, at best. I’m not one to complain, however, since Nadal is expected to face off in another epic final against Swiss Roger Federer a week from now.

I should be quick to note that my interest in tennis, though not always as passionate, goes back more than ten years, to the heydays of such classic recent players as Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten and Americans Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Kuerten was my first tennis crush, even if he was not the one to draw me to this elegant and highly suspenseful sport in the first place.

I’m looking forward to next week, and catching Federer for the first time this year.

Emile Hirsch Is Hot. ‘Speed Racer’ Isn’t.

I should’ve known that nothing good would come out of letting my shallow side get the best of me. Yes, ‘Speed Racer’ lead Emile Hirsch is one of the Sexiest Males Alive. Yes, when I applied the same reasoning to convince myself to see ‘Into The Wild‘, I got one of my best movie experiences this year. Thus, the prospect of watching him being his swoonworthy self for two hours, should be utterly painless, right?. Well, it wasn’t. Hirsch’s good looks cannot undo the fact that ‘Speed Racer’ is one of the worst movies of the year.

My main lapse of judgment probably occured already when I put this movie on my ‘maybe’ list. I noted the presence of Hirsch, and perceived the movie as some sort of car-racing action spectacle, directed by the Wachowski brothers, of ‘Matrix’ fame, no less. Had I taken the time to read up on the movie beforehand, I would quickly have realized that this was a kids flick, and then respectfully backed away. When I didn’t, I have no one to blame but myself.

In fact, Hirsch is the only pleasant thing ever to happen in this movie. The story of young Speed Racer (Hirsch, looking like a – smashing! – young Ray Liotta) fighting alongside his entreprenurial family to keep out of the hands of evil corporations and the keep the world safe for car racing, is terribly paced, visually repetitive and oddly humorless. Or, it doesn’t offer a single laugh to audience members over the age of seven. A badass chubby kid and his monkey throwing excrements at the bad guys, anyone?. The narration is awful at times, with characters flying across the screen, not-so-subtly highlighting what happens either off-screen or in their minds. Most of the time, ‘Speed Racer’ comes off as a Disney Channel movie on a seriously bloated budget.

It’s running time doesn’t help. 135 minutes feels like an eternity, and it runs out of ideas halfway through, only to embrace every little sentimental cliche in the book. The setup is extraordinarily slow, and the racing bit is not all that exciting (imagine a mix of Pod Racing and Pixar’s ‘Cars’), especially the second or third time around. Susan Sarandon and John Goodman do their best to save what can’t be saved, and end up annoying me with their wasted talent.

Since I knww about the movie’s critical pummeling, I probably should have kept to my first thought, and stayed with the photo stills.

‘High School Musical’ Character Ryan Evans Is Out And About

It was probably no shock to dedicated followers of Disney’s High School Musical, but in the stage version of the film, the obvious is finally revealed: Prolific dancer and on-again-off again Troy Bolton foe Ryan Evans (played by Lucas Grabeel in the films), is gay. His sexuality is never dealt with directly in the Disney movies, but as the show took to the stage, Evans took a more in-your-face gay attitude, reports the website AfterElton, interviewing the playwright David Simpatico. Simpatico says he modeled Ryan on some of his own experiences, and that he was happy for the creative freedom he got to develop the character as he saw fit.

This move could, of course, make it even harder for boys to admit that they enjoy the franchise, but in general I’m for everything that raises the awareness of gay issues in the media. Evans is no doubt the most high profile fictitious gay character since J.K. Rowling outed Albus Dumbledore, and he is probably also a little bit easier for young gays to relate to, as he is neither 1) a wizard or 2) old as hell. One could of course complain that Evans, a soft spoken drama queen and a dancer, is playing to gay stereotypes, but in my view that is beside the point for two reasons: 1) Many gay guys actually like musicals and dancing, and 2) it probably was the easiest way to get this kind of character to fit in to family friendly entertainment.

Sadly, I don’t think we can expect Ryan to be outed in the final High School Musical movie, set to premiere this October. If Disney were to endorse gayness outright, they would run a tremendous commercial risk, which I suspect they are not ready to take. But then again, I’m not sure how much it matters. Many people already assumed Ryan to be gay, and now that we know for sure, new light has been shed on both the previous movies, and the fall release.

For Lucas Grabeel, however, I sense rumours of his gayness will not die down anytime soon.

The New Attitude Magazine Website

When I had just recently come out, I was looking for a sense of fellowship and shared experience with other gay people like me. It was nothing sexual about it, not even a need to meet other people. Quite the opposite, actually. I was still somewhat uncomfortable with the idea of being gay, as I had not thought of myself in that way until fairly recently, at the same time that I felt a growing sense of pride in my newfound identity. I joined the message boards at Chadzboyz, only to slowly drift away. My first firm impression of what it means to be a young gay man, I got from the British gaymag Attitude Magazine.

I bought my first issue back in March 2007 – it was the annual Youth Issue, in which I was introduced to E4’s then upcoming Skins, and the picture site Famous Males Forums -, after having spent weeks working up the courage to pick it up at my local news agent, for fear that someone should for some reason quiz me about why I bought a gay magazine. They didn’t, of course, and when I bought the Sex Issue two months later, I had only minor such fears. I guess I had grown as a gay in only those short months.

Attitude and I immediately hit it off. It was exactly the kind of unabashed, self-conscious gay journalism I was looking for; charming, witty, unafraid and with the right mix of light lifestyle pieces, pointed culture criticism, and an eye on the political reality in a variety of countries. To outsiders, Attitude might seem a little in narrow in its scope, but for me, that was just what I hoped it would be. Here you had an entire magazine dedicated to people like me, with none of the shame that usually come with it! Attitude regularly features exceptionally well-written interviews with pop culture people important to the gay scene, like Andrew Lloyd Webber, Kylie Minogue and Rufus Wainwright, and also has a wonderful segment named ‘Any Queries?’, in which reader submit questions, often making the interviewing something far more exciting and unpredictable than your average promotional interview. In its recent issues, it has also published brilliant pieces on the state of gay rights in Australia, the gay implications of the race for Mayor of London, and discussed who of Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama would be best for gay right in the United States.

Something was lacking, however, if Attitude were to take a leap toward a complete gay experience. Amid turmoil with its publishing (among other things resulting in the absence of a July issue last year), the magazine’s website was taken down, and it was not reintroduced until this Monday, June 9th. I have signed up as a member, and I’m happy that they plan to preview some of the print content (living in Norway, the magazine is not available for sale until approximately two weeks after it’s UK release date). The ‘video’ section of the site seems a little dull yet, and I am not a fan of spaces highlighting random YouTube clips, but hopefully this will all improve in time.

This blog, and my presence at QueerAttitude means that I no longer am starved for gay sites on the web, but that of course doesn’t mean that I’m not happy that Attitude is back online. Will I be seeing you around?

Cristiano Ronaldo, And Other Reasons Soccer Is A Treasure Trove For Gays

First, let me quickly vent my frustration at the use of the term ‘soccer fan’. While I no doubt am a big fan of the game itself, it makes absolutely no sense to define one’s dedication to the sport in such generic, all-encompassing terms. ‘Soccer fan’ to me is a term used by people who are not sufficiently intested in the game to chose a favorite team (or teams), so they use soccer simply as a way to pass time. Of course, it is way more important than that (here, I will spare you an old Bill Shankly reference that is about as overused as that famous Voltaire reference everybody loves to make when discussing freedom of speak). In case you wondered, my favorites heading to this summer’s European Soccer Championship in Austria and Switzerland, are Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, in no particular order.
That said, I can of course still recognize why gays can be drawn to soccer, even without a longstanding passion for any particular team or playing style or whatever. That reason, as is often the case with gays, is the easy access to fit males stretching their physical limits. In my last post, I placed Portuguese International and World’s Best Player, Cristiano Ronaldo in the #6 spot on my Sexiest Males list, and he alone is a reason to hope for a long and successful campaign for Portugal. The best pictures that are available of him is in fact still the ones taken when he was playing for Portugal in the World Cup two years ago, and hopefully it is not to much to ask for a reprise in that matter as well. Portugal will also not be a drag to watch, soccer-wise, at least not if you judge them by their impressive 2-0 win against Turkey Saturday night. The only possibly drawback is that behind Ronaldo they do not have very many sexy players. Then again, who cares? If Ronaldo takes his top off after the game, or flexes his ass every once in a while, I’m sold anyhow.

Two days in, I have yet to come across the unexpected hunk, but German winger Bastian Schweinsteiger is growing on me. Fellow German Lukas Podolski caught my attention two years ago, and he is still someone to lay your eyes. Same goes for left defender Phillip Lahm, in a sort of geeky way. It’s early still, but I’m pretty sure I will never be bored, not matter the quality of the game. And Germany look strong this year, in every sense of the word.

Tonight, another one of my long-held favorites, the Netherlands, will go up against Italy in Group C. As Italy represents all that is evil in soccer, I would be surprised if they are chock full of eye candy, but the Dutch have provided a steady stream over the years. Unfortunately, Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is reportedly injured, as is Real Madrid’s Arjen Robben and Liverpool’s Ryan Babel, but their supply seems unending. If all else fails, I could of course nurture my somewhat odd attraction fellow Pudlian Dirk Kuyt.

These guys are just a handful of reasons why gays should not turn their backs on soccer. The list is likely to grow as the campaign rolls on.

For June, Jesse McCartney Is Named Sexiest Male

I recently introduced a new list on the top of my front page, ‘Sexiest Males Alive’. The title is fairly self-explanatory; I intend to continually expand and edit the list as of my liking. At the turn of each month, I plan to write a quick wrap-up, and to introduce newcomers and such. For June, this is what I have to say:

– To regular readers of this blog (if there are any) it might be no surprise to find that Jesse McCartney is currently the young man to beat. To me, however, it was quite surprising. I have compiled such lists regularly ever since I admitted my gayness two years ago, and McCartney had always been up there, but he had never been #1. Hunter Parrish, Charlie Hunnam, David Gallagher, Cristiano Ronaldo and even Sean Faris had, at times. And I fully expected Skins star Nicholas Hoult to hold on to the top spot, especially as new and incredibly hot nude pictures came out from the second season of Skins. But that was before Jesse McCartney released his new single Leavin’, and his new look. It’s not necessarily that he has become all that much hotter (I don’t know if that’s even possible), but a change is always nice every once in a while. Sadly, I can’t find a picture that does his new look complete justice.

– In early May, I also expected Mitch Hewer, Nick Hoult’s Skins co-star, to make a run for the top spot. And make no mistake about it; the fact that Hewer’s climb stops at #3 despite the Cosmo centrefold, is more do to the competition than anything else. His time will come, but I hope he will not fade into the darkness as his Skins tenure has come to an end.

– Hopefully, the pictures alone will make most of the other Top Ten picks understandable, but let me just quickly say a couple of words about some of them. The Charlie Hunnam of 2008 probably wouldn’t qualify for the upper end of this list (as I am definitely not into facial hair), but we will still have the memories of his QAF days. David Gallagher is a longtime favorite of mine, and one of those teen crushes that only now serve as early hints at my homosexuality. His looks have changed several times over the years, but he is still sexy, in a slightly rough-edged way. Zac Efron is no newcomer to this space, and his position was pretty much as expected. I am a little surprised, however, that he did not capitalize more on my watching High School Musical 2 again this month. In the fall, he will nevertheless be a man to watch, as the premiere of HSM3 is due in October. Sean Faris has been on the decline for the better part of the last 18 months, as the memories of Life As We Know It has slowly faded, but his Cosmo centrefold gave him a boost this month. Some might be surprised to see Jesse Eisenberg in the top ten, but don’t say I didn’t warn you. Unfortunately, I’m having trouble finding pics of him from The Squid and the Whale. And yes, I don’t exclusely judge people by their looks. Eisenberg’s charming is a great asset as well.

– For a quick look at places 11-20, Alex Pettyfer’s eleventh place showing is impressive. I have written about the reason in this space before, but his rise surprised even me. Other spots are occupied by such stalwarts as former 7th Heaven Tyler Hoechlin, Eragon co-star Chris Egan, and Jamie Bell of Hallam Foe. Bell could be on the rise, as I am pondering a DVD buy of said film. The highly touted Emile Hirsch ekes out a close win over doppelgängers Leonardo DiCaprio and Kevin Zegers, but the 90’s star, in particular, should never be counted out. It’s also worth noting that the aforementioned Eisenberg (who, four years after I first saw Roger Dodger should be considered a veteran presence) again put some distance himself and colleagues Michael Cera and Ricky Ullman. All three are part of what you might call a ‘geek quota’. How long will it last?

Stay tuned.

The list, as of June 7:

  1. Jesse McCartney
  2. Nicholas Hoult
  3. Mitch Hewer
  4. Charlie Hunnam
  5. Hunter Parrish

  15. Jeremy Sumpter
  16. Ricky Ullman
  17. Chris Egan
  18. Tyler Hoechlin
  19. Jamie Bell
  20. Kevin Zegers
  21. Aaron Carter

Five Mistakes Obama Made

Tonight Barack Obama will effectively clinch the Democratic presidential nomination, even though it could still take a day or two for enough superdelegates to rally to his side, and for Hillary Clinton to accept the inevitable. Therefore, this is as good a time as any to point out some things Obama did or not do in this primary campaign that could possibly damage him, either now or in the fall matchup against Republican Senator John McCain.

1) The not-so-rapid response. No matter what you think of the comments by Obama’s longtime pastor Jeremiah Wright – and I personally found them highly objectionable -, it did also reveal another possible weakness for Obama in the bare-knuckle general election fight: He seems reluctant to fight back against charges lobbed against himself. He only belatedly realized the severe political implications of his pastor connections, seemingly feeling that responding to attacks against someone who does not speak on his behalf was beneath him. Memo to candidate: The voters decide what is or isn’t fair game. Obama needs to adapt to this unpleasant political reality, unless he wants to be swiftboated out of consideration. Even though his handling of ‘bitter-gate’ was a clear improvement, this could still be a cause for concern.

2) He underestimated the Clinton brand. For all practical purposes, Obama has been the presumptive nominee for months. This is much due to the primary calendar, that delivered him a string of strong caucus showings and an eleven state winning streak in the weeks after Super Tuesday, which served to boost his aura of inevitably. However, this dynamic also seems to have made Obama a little too self-confident. Even if he sweeps South Dakota and Montana tonight, Clinton will have won more contests, more delegates and more votes in the closing months of this race. As Obama failed to drive Clinton out after Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania, he still decided to treat her as an asterisk in his campaign, which only strengthened Clinton supporters’ sense that he was taking then for granted in looking to the general election. Much of the subsequent bitterness and intraparty bickering could have been avoided, had Obama shown a little more humility at this point in the campaign.

3) The Michigan/Florida debacle. Of course, the Democratic National Committee and Michigan and Florida Democratic Party leaders are mostly blame for this. Sure, it would be unfair to award Clinton all the votes out of Michigan, in a race where Obama wasn’t even on the ticket, and especially if this could have strengthened Clinton’s moral claim in wooing superdelegates. But, isn’t that pretty much what happened anyway? Heading out of the Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting Saturday, Clinton supporters were absolutely outraged that the meeting decided to award Obama four additional Michigan delegates. From a tactical standpoint: Did the Obama campaign need these extra delegates? No. Had the race in Clinton’s favor? Most certainly not. Bottom line: The validity of Clinton’s claims aside, the Obama blew their first chance at establishing party unity.

4) He’s still a not a good debater. Presidential candidate debates are probably overrated when it comes to influencing voters, and Obama has improved vastly in this setting over the course of the campaign. John McCain is himself not exactly a formidable opponent in this particular regard. There are 3 reasons why I’m still concerned, however: 1) I’m still not sure whether Obama has been vetted as thoroughly as he needs to. Several of the possible problem spots for Obama (Tony Rezko, William Ayers, the Chicago teamsters) might have been deemed largely irrelevant in a Democratic primary. My educated guess is, John McCain will not think so. 2) Obama can sometimes come off as annoyed or overbearing in debates, if he feels that the issues raised are irrelevant (for examples, watch the final Clinton-Obama debate). If the voters decide these issues are indeed relevant, he risks coming of as arrogant. 3) These debates are all about expectations. No matter how brilliant the Obama team might be at the expectations game, he will enter the debates as the man to beat. If he fails to deliver, it could temporarily derail his campaign, as it did to Gore in 2000.

5) Obama lacks a campaign narrative. Or, he doesn’t, not really. He has, and will continue to have ‘change’. But will ‘change’ be enough? Obama has worked tirelessly to rid himself of the perception that he is ‘just words’, but judging from his less than stellar grip on blue-collar voters and the less educated or less affluent voters, he still has some work to do. He let Clinton run with the economic populist mantle after John Edwards bowed out in January, and so he has had problems offering up a rationale for his candidacy, beyond the fact that he has a vision for unifying the country. He obviously has thought long and hard about how to achieve this, but if he doesn’t know how to communicate it, he may still come up short against McCain.

**

All these mistakes can be fixed, of course. The question is how deep the Democratic split is, and how he can make up for all the time he has lost. And, let me be ansolutely clear: I still want him to win.

With New Video, Jesse McCartney Is ‘Leavin’ Me Breathless

Before we start, I want to clarify one thing: The autobiographical nuggets that regularly surface on this blog, about which guys made me take a closer look at my sexual orientation, were not supposed to come this often. If I am to blog to blog at all, I have to picture an average reader, but If I don’t have any, it’s probably because he or she has grown tired of the utterly self-observed tone of this blog. So, dear reader, before I engage in yet another round of psychoanalysis, I apologize.

That said, teen heartthrob Jesse McCartney really has a special place in my gay history. I had only just begun my process of soul-searching when he graced Norwegian TV screens as surfer Bradin Westerley in the WB’s one season wonder Summerland (even though it officially spanned two season, the wonder part was pretty much lost after the initial 13 episodes). It would of course be a stretch to say that he made me realize I was gay, but he sure spurred more questions. It could be painfiul at the time, but looking back, I’m of course deeply greatful. And, come to think of it; how ‘painful’ can life be, when your main problem is that you simply can’t stop drooling over some hot TV hunk? The answer, of course, is it was some other kind of pain.

Those days are long gone, however, but luckily, McCartney isn’t. I didn’t know of his music career until I discovered Summerland, but I have to admit that I was sold immediately. His debut album, Beautiful Soul, contains several magnificent dance floor fillers, and your occasionally irresistible sobby ballad. Deciding to go all-out in the matter of gayness, I quickly half-embraced (which kind of undermines the whole ‘all-out-ness’, doesn’t it?) Jesse’s music publicly, and though it has cost me some heckle, I’m no longer ashamed of it. A guy is entitled to his guilty pop pleasure, aint he?

Speaking of pleasure, we have finally reached the main point of this post. McCartney has a new music video out, called ‘Leavin’, and though the tune itself has to take the back seat in my memory, it’s still a decent song. The pleasure comes from discovering Jesse’s new look. I have a thing for blondes, so a part of me still mourns the loss of the old Jesse, but that’s only until I sit down to inspect Jesse 2.0. a little closer. Damn, is he hot! His face is still boyishly cute, but the he carries himself with a newly acquired self-conciousness that really suits him. Earlier, I’ve compared Emile Hirsch to a young Leonardo DiCaprio, and now I think it’s time to do so again, with McCartney. Many of the stills in the video reminded me of Leo in The Beach (particularly at 2:33), and I’m not one to complain. Especially not when he shows us his hairy armpits.

Ain’t it nice to be reunited with an old flame, only to discover that your chemistry is better than ever?

He’s A Good Teaser

Sifting through the ever expanding list of bad movies I’ve watched for not so straight reasons, today we’ve come to Stormbreaker, the 2006 junior agent flick starring young Alex Pettyfer and couple of hits wonder Alicia Silverstone. The movie itself feels like a cheaper and less tech-savvy version of 2003’s Agent Cody Banks, but it wasn’t quite as bad as I had initially feared. But again, that’s of course beside the point, as I’m sure it was for all the targeted pre-teens who sat through its theatrical run. The point was the emergence of Pettyfer, not the movie itself.

Much like fellow youngster Jeremy Sumpter, it is actually quite difficult to do full justice to his good looks. These blond babes are pretty damn near perfect. As we’ve touched upon briefly on this blog earlier, that of course doesn’t necessarily catapult them to the top of my Sexiest Males list, but their presence in a movie is nevertheless pleasantly felt.

Same goes for the shirtless model shoot that soon surfaced of the Stormbreaker star. They aren’t especially racy, but they are still super hot. Whether you’re an ab-centric kind a person, prefer him teasingly stylized or with as little clothing as possible, he’s a blood boiler. And even though I usually don’t find smoking to be a turn on, he handles his cigarettes elegantly as well. This sure is one to watch. For hours at the time.

Eragon, Grown Up

I meant to note this months ago, when the annual Attitude Youth Issue first surfaced, but somehow I didn’t. That doesn’t mean that the pictures of cover boy Ed Speleers, star of adventure dud Eragon, are not noteworthy. I’m deeply ashamed to admit that I caught it in its theatrical run back in 2006, but the reason was not Speleers, so much as his co-star, Home and Away alumni Chris Egan. To my deep disappointment Egan’s role is very minor (in fact he holds a grand total of 10 minutes of screentime), and after that, I was stuck with 70 more minutes of this utterly unimpressive tweenybopper dragonfest. Back then, Speleers simply couldn’t save my day.

He’s closer this time around, probably because I don’t have to bear with his severely limited acting skills. Not even the Attitude shot catapults him onto my 20 Sexiest Males Alive list, but he sure is growing up to be a nice-looking man. Several of the pictures really gets out the best of him, and you can tell that he has modeled before. The shirtless shot reveals a chest to die for, and also between the less daring ones, he gives out a certain glow of apparent hunkiness. His boyish face does him no harm either, especially in the picture in the white sweater. And I didn’t know that a guys calves could be this hot!

However boyish, his face is also the feature that sometimes makes me write him off as good looking, but not decidedly sexy. When he puts up a serious look he has me melting, but there is something about his smile that makes him seem almost too old for his age. His face looks akwardly strained, and he kind of reminds me of Haley Joel Osment, who can be cute at times as well, only to dip into his The World’s Oldest Teen look. On average, however, they both come out on the upper end of the grade scale.
